The Vox: Yes to Nails/No to Nails

I was talking to my friend last night, and the topic of nail cosmetics came up. What do u think of 1. French Tipped nails and 2. Coloured nails worn by Seventh-day Adventist? Is it right? Do you think God has a problem with it?

  1. Me first? :-s...oh well here goes...

As the issue is not salvivic (ie. directly related to our salvation), I don't believe that whether or not one wears nail polish determines for sure that they will go to heaven or that they are sinning, but on a personal level (as in for me and Jesus)I think the wearing of colored nails and the like is wrong and unnecessary. These reasons are PURELY PERSONAL and cannot be used to judge others, but here they are anyways:

    1. As Adventist we are a peculiar people and we are called to be different in order for us to carry out our sole purpose in life: to make disciples and prepare people for heaven. Therefore, wouldn't taking up everything that explicitly defines the world continuosly blur the lines so that others (and we) can no longer see the difference? And then gradually we say to ourselves regarding other issues 'after nuthin nuh really wrong wit this' or 'times changing, most of the rules old-fashioned anyways...then after a while NOTHING is really that wrong (unless its murder)and the whole idea of self-denial and simple undefiled Christianity goes through the door...

    2. A life of modesty is to be maintained and while other parts of dress can be argued, I don't get the feeling that wearing nail polish would be a part of the whole modesty thing either...its just me...

    3. I signed to it on the Adventist Baptismal Vows so if I don't like the rule (which is perfectly fine not to like something) or choose to live contrary to it then maybe I shouldn't have signed it, being a vow and all or maybe I should just worship without using the name "Adventist"...

    4. For some, wearing cosmetics (& jewellery) is a good indication of where they stand. ( U ever notice that when SOME persons 'leave the church' thats the first outward thing that is seen?...well is so it look to me...anyways....)It is usually a stepwise process...Outer 'demise' indicating inner spiritual 'demise?...little things slide into the otherwise simple Christian life while larger important things slide out...? hmmm....

    5. When someone encounters another in our culture (Jamaica), the sight of natural nails usually causes one to immediately consider whether or not a person is Adventist...or Pentecostal...Christian nonetheless...good for witnessing, nuh tru?

    6. It was wrong a couple years ago, so why is it 'ok' now?

"The idolatry of dress is a moral disease...There should be no carelesness in dress...For Christ's sake whose witnesses we are, we should seek to make the best of our appearance...Having before us the picture of the world's demoralization up on the point of fashion, how dare professed Christians follow in the path of the worldling?..."EGW Messages to Young People(358,359)

    Jus sayin my peice...LF

  2. I cant lie, the french tips look good at times, but that's just aesthetic temptation. I could not have said it better myself, I concur with you in all the arguments presented. As you said before "It was wrong a couple years ago, so why is it 'ok' now?" I don't think we as Adventist understand the concepts of dieing to self and being in the world and not of it.We are suppose to life simple lives and dress in such a manner that it does not attract eyes to us (believe it or not we are inviting praise for ourselves), hence fashion should not be the thing we follow so much that it consumes us. Oh you never give me an idea of how much it usually cost to get such patterns done.

  3. I just love the E.G input, "I mean how dare professed Christians follow in the path of the worldling". Quite appropriate for this topic, could not be any better.
